2013 Rd8 Race Report – Rockingham Speedway
Rockingham Forest wheelers did a good job of rescuing this race as the circuit was very busy for this weekend. It was worth the last minute rush as the circuit they laid on had a mix of fun fast sections.
The Veterans race was a hot one with Lloyd Bettles and Mike Winters in close combat chased hard by Scott Rose on the start loop. First Rose had problems then Bettles suffered a crash which bizarrely caused his bars to force themselves over his bikes top tube making the bike un-rideable but not broken. Nick Towers took over the chase and finished second to Winters who took his first ever Vet win. Rose chased back hard in the heat and just pipped Steve Giles for 3rd on the last lap. The Veterans overall is still wide open with so many different winners, but Towers has put himself in a strong position with this finish.
Another first win went to Jack Peterson in the grand Vet class. Pete Busby got a fast start and led early on but then punctured and dropped back. Peterson and Tim Stowe then circulated together for the full five laps before Peterson made the jump upto and down the final drop under the flyover. Martin Eadon was never far away in third but dropped back with a soft tyre towards the end but held on. Busby and Stowe are locked in an epic battle for the overall series and it really is a tough one to call even now.
Ryan Henry took the senior win and despite a slow start to the series looks like the series overall is his once more. The battle for second came down to a sprint finish between Mark Proudman and Mark Johnson which went beyond the barriers and the video caught the spectacular crash before it to was flattened. Proudman limped across the line for 2nd and Johnson third, but it didn’t damage his series hopes for second.
Fern Henry took another win in an un-eventful Ladies race ahead of Vincenza Perkins with Amelia Cambridge in third. The overall series is still wide open with all to play for with another finish for Roz Giles putting her in the hot seat.
U23 race was a flag to flag win for Luke Markham to fire him to the top of the series for now, Martin Sheasby in second did his series hopes a world of good while the big players were away at the weekends National race in wales. Tim Green claimed third.
The Youth race was a Welland Valley Whizz kids clean sweep of all the positions, Louis Killworth taking the win from Ross Marriott and the final big cheer of the day going to Oliver Haines for completing three laps.
