2013 Rd2 Race Report – Avalanche
2013 Round 2 Avalanche Adventure, Sibbertoft.
The course tonight was a challenge to both rider and machine, no great sapping mud but plenty of tricky double track, laden with deep puddles. The fine grit that covered everything caused quite a few mechanicals shaking up the results.
After the start loop and a full lap Richard Jones/XCRacer.com, Sam Sayers/ Lutterworth RC, Matt Barrett/Run & Ride and Tom Wragg/Flatoutcycles.co.uk had formed a lead group as the clear early leaders. As riders negociated the quarry section the race was well spread out a sure sign that the course was proving a tough test.
Race leader Richard Jones had other problems though, aproaching the quarry for the second time he’d started to pull out a gap, but took a wrong turn and headed off course for a good distance. This left the lead to Barrett with a hard charging Sam just behind. Jones re-joined behind both Mark Proudman/Podfs and Leszek Jezierski/Treads CC and set off in chase again. Slowly but surely he picked off all the riders one by one and completed the race once again as first man across the line overall and U23 winner.
Barrett won the senior event and second went to a super late charge from Jezierski pushing Wragg back to third, Proudman held fourth. Sayers blew in spectacular style for the final two laps dropping over six minutes but held onto 2nd U23 spot from an excellant ride by Ben Morris/Welland Valley CC in 3rd.
Special mention should go to Youth ride Jake Poole/Dirtwheels Cycle RT who put in some great lap times and a ride that would have pitched him well up the senior result. Rd1 winner Henry Barnes/Baines Racing had to settle for 2nd from Bradley Symonds/Coalville Wheelers
Returning 2012 Ladies champ Hollie Bettles/AJ Cycles claimed an easy win from an improving Roz Giles/Numplumz with Claire Beazeley/Naked Bikes showing consitentcy with two podium finishes this year in third.
The Grand Vets tonight showed their pace tonight as the three leaders pulled away from the rest of the field and the leading Veterans too. Pete Harris/Pearce cycles made no mistake this week as Tim Stowe/Jewson-MI Racing paid for a sluggish start. Harris reversed the Rd1 result but Stowe had to overcome his teamate Peter Busby who held 2nd for the first laps. Geoff Baines/Baines Racing made it a good night for the Baines family with 4th with a superb 5th place for Bus pass holder Vic Barnett/Welland Valley CC
In the Vets Nick Towers/Naked Bikes RT dealt with the quarry and woods start section to lead out before Mark Gomes/Leisure Lakes took advantage of a few missing riders who are concentrating on this weekends Regional Championship races and pulled out a good leading gap. At the start of the last lap Gomes still led but the ride of the night from Mark Gray/Welland Valley Tri had him closing fast. Gray’s endurance power enabled him to pass and pull out a comfortable gap on that final circuit for his first ever win. A good battle between a chasing pack of Towers, Scott Rose/Welland Valley CC and Mike Winters/VC Rutland fizzled out at the end as Winters had a mechanical and gave up that 3rd podium step to Rose.
So comparing the first two rounds shows a good mix up of riders at the front in each class Rich Jones the rider with two wins, its all to play for. 2013 champ Ryan Henry did a practice lap but failed to start and is up against it to hold onto his title this year.
